Red Wine Ketchup

When you reach a certain skill level at cooking you often find yourself dissatisfied with everything pre-prepared. As a result, I can’t resist doctoring a frozen or bottled product when I find the flavor insufficient. That’s how I came up with Red Wine Ketchup. Though I typically serve this with meatloaf, I get the feeling it would make a great barbeque sauce too.

Here’s How You Do It

Difficulty Level: Easy
Prep and Cook time: 20 Minutes
Yields 1 Cup


1 Cup of Red Wine – Use whatever leftover red wine you have. I generally keep a cheap bottle in my fridge for sauce making.

½ Cup Ketchup

1 Clove of Garlic, Grated

1 Teaspoon Fresh Peeled, Grated Ginger

½ Teaspoon of Honey or other liquid sweetener

Hot Sauce, to taste – Optional


1 Small Pot

1 Wooden Spoon

Measuring Cups and Spoons

1 Grater

Put all the ingredients in a pot, stir once with a wooden spoon to combine everything, and bring to a boil.

Simmer on low heat, stirring occasionally for about 15 minutes or until the liquid has reduced into one thick dark sauce.
